Risk assessment

Introduction

In this blog post, I will discuss and highlight the risks and health and safety issues for our five minute single camera production.

Risk assessment

1. identify the hazards

The hazards that might be involved within the production of our media product are just minor injuries like tripping over wires and injuring on appliances. But no major harm and hazards will be a threat.

  • Bedroom/house/living room - uneven surfaces, tripping over props e.g. chairs, lifting heavy equipment.
  • Uneven surfaces, other members of public (disruption and can cause injuries), hot food and drink (burning harm), sharp utensils (knives, forks, etc).

2. decide who might be harmed

The people who may be harmed are the filming crew and the actors/actresses in the product.

3. Precautions and solutions

The precautions and solutions that we can do to ensure the safety of the people involved in the production of the film are making sure we follow safety procedures when handling goods, and putting up signs and informing people of any hazards available.

Location list

Introduction

In this blogpost, I am going to list the locations that we are going to use within our five minute single camera techniques. The post will also highlight why we are using these locations and where they will be.

Locations

  • a desolate and old house - to set the scene/surroundings in a deprived situation. We have got permission to film in a house which has the desired setting we need.
  • a broken and messy bedroom - to show the personal space of the female character. The bedroom shows the privacy of the situation. We have also gained permission to use a bedroom
  • living room - the living room will be used to show the protagonists father, all drunk and passed out on the sofa. We have also gained permission for access to a living room.
The advantage of our settings/locations is that it has meanings behind the purpose and they are based in regular, reachable and cheap locations.
The disadvantages on some of our settings/locations is that it may be hard to get the exact effect of a disadvantaged house (all broken and dirty).

Shot list

Introduction

This blogpost will highlight some of the shots that we will include in our one minute single camera production.

Shot list

Over the shoulder shot - using it when we see the boy standing at the doorway, looking at the girl in the bathroom

Mid shot - using it to shot the girl walking up the stairs to grab the setting and the character in the scene.

Close up shot - to grab the whole character in the scene to portray their emotions and body language.

Extra long shot - to get all of the scenery and characters from a distance to show the audience their surroundings.

High angle shot - when the camera is pointing down towards the father lying on the sofa. This shows the scene from the characters point of view and to make the character seem inferior.

Analyzing short films

Introduction

In this blog post, I am going to analyse three different short films to help me gather ideas for our five minute single camera product. The aspects that I am going to be looking at in each of the films are;
  • Formats
  • Genre
  • Narrative structure
  • Mise-en-scene (settings, colours, props)
  • Sounds (diegetic & non-diegetic)
  • Camera shots

Tick tock - short film by Ien Chi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w14v4vGUDdg)

Formats: The format for this film is of a single drama, as it tells the whole story within this one product and only runs in one single time. These types of films have a start, middle and ending and don't continue through episodes.

Genre:
The type of genre that this film categorizes under is the realist genre. This is because the story and settings is based on real-life events or coincidences.

Narrative structure: The narrative structures that this short film falls under is a flashback non-linear structure as the story does not happen in a chronological order and looks at events which have happened in the past. The film is also a single strand narrative, as it is based on the evens of a single character or protagonist and ends as a closed ended film as it informs the audience on what fully happened in the story.

Mise-en-scene (settings, colours, props): The settings used in this short film was on the grounds of a university or college campus. This is to show the age and innocent/stupidity of the characters as the plot is based on the consequences of life-threatening actions.

The colours used in this short film are quite gloomy and dull, because it is trying to represent an important message/moral in the film, which is quite a depressing thought. The colours and tones used help to portray the importance of the message better.

The main props used in this short film are the clock (to represent time and how we can lose control of it/how we would change it if we could), the medicine bottles (to represent drugs/the cause on what triggered the problem - equilibrium), phone (to send out his last messages or communication with loved ones), wallet (to represent wealth and greed), etc.

Sounds (diegetic & non-diegetic): The types of sound used in the film was diegetic voices of the characters talking (even though it was in reverse), diegetic sound of the clocks ticking, but the noise was altered/edited a little to heighten the volume, to signify the importance of it. The non-diegetic sounds included in the film was a faint soundtrack playing called "Anthem" by Emancipator.

Camera shots: Some of the camera shots used in the film were long shots to show the audience fully on what is in the screen/going on, close up shots to show the emotion and tension that the characters are portraying, mid shots to show what actions the character is doing (mid shot of him talking on the phone and mid shot of him running up the stairs).

A futuristic short film HD: by sight systems (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK_cdkpazjI)

Formats: The format for this film is of a single drama, as it tells the whole story within this one product and only runs in one single time. These types of films have a start, middle and ending and don't continue through episodes.

Genre: The type of genre that this film categorizes under is the Sci-Fi genre. This is because the events and plot of this film is based on futuristic themes and science-fiction effects.

Narrative structure:  The narrative structures that this short film falls under is a anti-realist linear structure as the story happens in a chronological order and looks at superficial or CGI effect themes (not true to real life). The film is also a single strand narrative, as it is based on the evens of a single character or protagonist and ends as a closed ended film as it informs the audience on what fully happened in the story.

Mise-en-scene (settings, colours, props): The settings used in this short film is a plain white room to represent clear and untouched items, as now technology does everything for them and the colour white is symbolized with technology a lot (Apple products, intertextuality to the film I-Robot). They also use the setting of a restaurant to signify romance and a dating/socializing area.

The colours used in the film are again predominantly white to help relate to technology again, and both the characters were wearing grey to represent metallic tones/technology again.

The props used in this film were mainly the eye contacts to show how they are controlled or controlling their mind and behaviour and they also used a lot of alcohol and glasses to represent intoxication, and them not being able to control their actions.

Sounds (diegetic & non-diegetic): The diegetic soundtracks used in the film were the voices and sounds (e.g. the glasses chinking) as they all naturally occurred within the scene, but there was use on non-diegetic sounds such as the soundtrack/music playing in the background and the beeps and clicks of the digital programming, which were put in for effect.

Camera shots: Some of the camera shots used in the film was a over the shoulder shot to get the camera in view from the characters eyes/perspective, another shot was a long shot to show the audience the differences within the room of when the character could see all of the technology on the screen, and what was on the wall in reality.

Stay Out Of The Woods - Short film directed by Albert Gonzalez (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NwKCTkgTmE)

Formats: The format for this film is of a single drama, as it tells the whole story within this one product and only runs in one single time. These types of films have a start, middle and ending and don't continue through episodes.

Genre: The type of genre that this film categorizes under is the horror genre. This is because the theme and techniques used resemble the features of the horror genre.

Narrative structure: The narrative structure that this short film falls under is a realistic structure as it the film is based true life events/occurrances. The film also falls under the multi-strand narrative because the film is based on more than one character.

Mise-en-scene (settings, colours, props): The settings used in this film are located in the woods as it relates to the name of the film. Also the woods are seen as a dark and mysterious place, which is a effective place which relates to the horror theme.

The colours used in the film are quite clear quality/bright colours, which is ineffective for a horror theme. This has made the message of horror less scary, as they have shown clear skies and bright sunlight.

The main props used in the film were masks. This was a effective prop to use in a horror as if hides the identity of a villian, which makes people more anxious and scared on who the people is.

Sounds (diegetic & non-diegetic): The diegetic sounds used in the film were the speech and noises (e.g. car engine) which all naturally occured within the scenes. The non-diegetic sounds used in the film was a eerie and quiet soundtrack placed behind the voices of the film to help create auditory tension for the viewer.

Camera shots: Some examples of camera shots that were used in this short film were close-up shots of the characters faces to show the expressions and emotions that they are portraying. They also used extra closeup shots to show that the surroundings around the characters are closing in, and they are getting confined or forced into a scary situation. The final example of a camera shot used in the film is a over the shoulder shot of when the boy is looking into the car mirror at the girls. This shows that he cant look his victims in the eye and is guilty.

Evaluation for one minute production

Introduction

In this blog post  I am going to evaluate my one minute single camera production. The questions I am going to analyse are;
  • What is your one minute single camera production about?
  • Who was your target audience? was this successful?
  • How well did each person fulfill their roles within the group?
  • Where there any problems? If so, how did you overcome them?
  • What were your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What improvements did you make and why?
  • What will you do next time?
What is your one minute single camera production about?

Our one minute single camera production is based on the romantic comedy genre. The plot starts off with a boy talking on Facebook to an anonymous girl. The scene then switches to him talking into the camera (audience) about how attractive this girl is. The scene then switches to the girl talking to the boy over Facebook  but it does not show her face. This is to keep the identity of the girl hidden. She then talks about how she is going to arrange a meeting with him, and how excited she is.

The scene then cuts to their meeting at the park, and the camera shows them from the opposite sides of the pond. The don't see each other until the boy spots her from far. He decides to move in closer and sees that she is not what he expected. To reassure himself, he hides behind a tree to look at her and is horrified at the shock. He then tries to avoid her and makes a run for it, leaving her in the park to look for him.

Who was your target audience? was this successful?

Our audience for our minute production are both male and female users from the ages of 16-30 who are regular users of Facebook or other social networking websites. Our film effectively met the standards/expectations of our target audience as it contained the humour, language and style which relates to our audience.

How well did each person fulfill their roles within the group?

I feel we all fulfilled our roles appropriately and all took charge and responsibility for tasks which play to our strengths to help achieve a successful production piece. We also carried out good communication, as we helped to update each other on any missing or absent information to help us keep on target for our grades.

We did this by splitting our tasks into three sections (pre-production, production and post production). I carried out the pre-production tasks by structuring our information and posting it into the appropriate blog posts. My team members helped us all to fulfill these tasks by carrying out the research behind the information and passing it to me through emails, images and blog posts.

Marian then carried out the production tasks, as she has strengths such as ideas and creativity to help film the appropriate scenes for our one minute single camera production. She also organised and got permission for our characters and locations, to enable us to film according to our schedule. We as team members helped to give input on what we think may be effective or appropriate for our film.

Shuab then carried out our post-production tasks as he has the skills and knowledge for the editing software due to previous experiences. He carried out the editing tasks for the film, by sorting out the technical features for our sound and visual scenes. We helped him as a team by again giving our input and opinions on what sound tracks or effects that should put in/used.

Overall, I feel we worked efficiently as a team as we all completed tasks according to our strengths and by maintaining efficient communication, we completed tasks on time and to the best of our ability.

Where there any problems? If so, how did you overcome them?

The problems that came up within our group were sudden changes in the characters, as we had originally got permission for a different actress, but due to personal problems, she was unable to do it. But we resolved the matter by getting another actress in time, and continued creating our production piece according to our schedule.

Another problem which arose during the process of filming our single camera technique product was that weather conditions got worse (snow, ice and fog) during our production timings (filming our scenes). So it was quite difficult to travel from different locations, and when we had to film outside, it caused a few problems, but we resolved it by dressing suitably for the weather and using the appropriate transport methods to get to our locations.

The final problem which occurred during our one minute production was that a few absences occurred due to problems like exams and illnesses, but we resolved the problems by updating and letting our team members know in advance if we were unable to attend.

What were your strengths and weaknesses?

The strengths throughout the duration of making our product was that we managed to keep on track of tasks, completed tasks to the best of our ability and according to our time-frames, kept good communication and worked well as a team.

I feel these were our strengths as it helped us to create a good one minute single camera product to the best of our ability and according to our deadlines. Also good teamwork was a strength as it helped us create a product that we were all proud of and according to what we wanted.

Our weaknesses in the production of our work was that we had a few absences and unfortunate weather problems, but we managed to resolve them and work together to help fulfill the roles or tasks which were missing.

What will you do next time (improvements)?

The changes that we will make next time are that we will complete all our pre-production tasks before we start production to ensure everything is completed on time and in order. Another change that we will make is that as the weather will be better, and because days will be longer, we will be more adventurous with our locations to help create a more effective product.

Also to improve our next product, we will ensure that we constantly update our diary log weekly, to ensure we stay on top of tasks and records. Finally, to help improve the quality of our film, we will try to get hold of equipment such as microphones and lighting, as we had slight problems and interference with our sound quality when we was outside.

Diary log - 7/2/13

In today's session, we edited our gathered scenes, edited the sound on our product and went over any pre-production tasks that were left incomplete.

We had a few issues like losing (but then finding again) some video clips and trying to trace back some pre-production tasks in accordance to the date, but we resolved the issues.

The session helped us to gather our information ready in time to create our post-production evaluation next week.
